NFL commissioner Goodell defended the league about concussions policies

On Wednesday, the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s policies on concussions before Congress. He denied a connection between head injuries players in NFL jerseys suffered on the football field and later brain diseases. But it seemed that he did not have strong enough evidence to prove that.

But at least he promised improvement. He told members of the House Judiciary Committee, including the committee chairman, Michigan Democrat John Conyers, that ht league is taking steps to make the game safer.

When being asked to give his explanation, Goodell replied by saying a medical expert could give a better answer than he could. However Dr. Ira Casson, chairman of the NFL’s committee on concussions, had not testified. Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Calif., played a clip of a TV interview in which Casson evidence of a link between multiple head injuries in NFL players with brain disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

New NFL Players Association leader DeMaurice Smith also testified along with Goodell. Smith said the union and the league will do better in this area together. The two agreed to turn over players’ medical records to the committee.
